Eversource Energy (formerly PSNH) is New Hampshire’s largest electric utility, serving about 500,000 homes and businesses throughout the state. They employe over 1,500 people at a variety of facilities including three fossil fuel-fired generating plants, one wood-burning power plant, nine hydroelectric facilities, and a multitude of offices, garages and warehouses. Operating in a highly regulated industry, Eversource Energy is no stranger to stringent safety requirements both on and off site and routinely goes above and beyond the minimum precautions required by law to keep their employees, and the general public, safe.
Eversource Energy has worked with Bode Equipment on numerous projects to meet their material handling and workplace safety needs, including large scale storage projects and loading dock and door solutions. Confident in the knowledge of the Bode team, they contracted Bode once again to design and install safety systems for 13 different mezzanine locations. The existing mezzanines were used to store low-use materials, and while they were not accessed frequently, Eversource Energy felt that there was still a potential for worker injury that they wanted to minimize. The style of the existing mezzanine gates, while not an OSHA requirement, was of concern to Eversource Energy management. They wanted to ensure that employees felt safe and secure while accessing the mezzanines leading edge and that there was no opportunity for materials/personnel to fall below.
Bode President and Project Manager, Scott Fawcett visited each of the 13 sites and met with facility employees to assess the unique needs of each location. Based on these assessments, Scott recommended three different kinds of gates be used to accommodate the unique characteristics of the different facilities. The combination of sliding, double drop and pivot gates allowed each location to have a custom solution. In addition, adding fall arrest safety systems such as lanyards and harnesses were incorporated to the overall scope of the project. Utilizing Wildeck safety products and Spanco’s fall arrest systems, the project became a safety showcase. The gates were chosen for their durability and ease of operation.
“The communication and coordination on this project was outstanding,” says Director of Facilities, Blair Gourley. “The Bode team not only provided regular updates on the progress of each install, they worked in such a professional and unobtrusive manner, never impeding the day-to-day work in any of our facilities.”
“I have complete confidence in the knowledge and abilities of the Bode team,” continues Gourley. “For anything material handling or warehouse related, Bode is where I go.”
